Makoto Suematsu

Makoto Suematsu, MD, PhD, is a distinguished academic and researcher, currently serving as Professor Emeritus at the Keio University School of Medicine. He holds a medical degree and a PhD, both from Keio University. Dr. Suematsu has had an illustrious career, marked by significant contributions to the fields of biochemistry, gas biology, metabolic systems biology, and cancer metabolism.
Dr. Suematsu graduated from Keio University School of Medicine in 1983 and completed his training at the Department of Medicine. In 1991, he expanded his expertise by visiting the University of California San Diego, where he worked as a Research Bioengineer at the Institute for Bioengineering. His academic achievements led to his appointment as Professor and Chair of the Department of Biochemistry at Keio University School of Medicine in 2001. He further served as Dean of the Keio University School of Medicine, showcasing his leadership and commitment to academic excellence.
From April 2015 to March 2020, Dr. Suematsu was appointed by the Japanese Government as the Founding President of the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). In this role, he played a pivotal part in shaping the future of medical research and development in Japan. After his tenure at AMED, he returned to Keio University School of Medicine, where he continues to contribute to the field as Professor and Chair of Biochemistry.

- Investigating the role of gas molecules in cellular function and their applications in medicine.
- Developing metabolic systems biology approaches to study complex biological processes.
- Utilizing bioimaging techniques to elucidate cancer metabolism and its implications for treatment.
